In 1893, a tragedy strikes again, this time is much closer to Rebecca’s household. Rebecca is a very loving mother, but she is certainly not stupid – she notices her husband’s reliance on alcohol. They do manage to have a second child though, a little girl.

We see him busy with meetings, and brushing off Rebecca’s comments during the dinner table as if he was embarrassed of his wife. Geoffrey was always devoted to his work and passions: meteorology and railways. She feels her husband distancing herself from her. However, despite all the trauma and heartbreak, life goes on and Rebecca and Geoffrey’s son is born. It was a devastating chapter to read, and to find out how unsanitary hospitals were back then. However, at Christmas 1887 there is heartbreak and loss in Rebecca’s life, as one of her friends dies in childbirth. Rebecca is expecting a child at the same time as her two friends, Bessie and Janey. There is real joy in the house, as both her and Geoffrey are excited to become parents. Her husband Geoffrey is much older than her, and she fears he might be disappointed in her. She feels fortunate to be married, and yet feels a bit bashful of what’s to come during the wedding night. We first encounter Rebecca in 1887 on her wedding night in Tredelerch, her husband’s house in Cardiff, Wales. The book is split into two parts: ‘Marriage’ and ‘Choice’. I truly enjoyed this story, I found it very heart-warming and uplifting. If you like a good mix of an evocative depiction of the Victorian era and a modern-thinking heroine then Rebecca’s Choice is the novel for you. This book has a beautiful setting in Cardiff, South Wales. One man will save her from destitution, the other will offer her the love and excitement that she aches for.
